Product Description

Find the right hedge for you

These are Thuja plicata (Western Red Cedar) that are 2.75-2.85m tall (9’0″-9’4″). They are too tall to be delivered using our standard pallet service. We can deliver them on a double pallet but please note that someone will need to be available to help unload the plants by hand or with a forklift/loader.

These Thuja plicata are in 30 litre pots and need two people to lift them.

Delivery is usually within 1-7 working days, please choose your delivery date during the checkout process.

We recommend planting these Thuja plicata between 60 and 100cm apart (2-3ft) depending how quick you want the plants to fill in and form a dense screen. Plant at 60cm (2ft) apart if you want a quick screen or 100cm (3ft) apart if you are willing to wait a bit longer for the hedge to form. A good compromise is 75cm (2’6″) apart. You can use our Hedge Spacing Calculator to work out how many you need.

Please note: we measure height from the top of the rootball to the top of the plant. Heights quoted will be the height of the plants on delivery and when planted (as long as you don’t plant them too deep!). The eventual height of the hedge will depend on pruning.

Prices are per plant and include VAT but not delivery. For delivery charges, see our Delivery page or add the plants to your basket and the delivery charge will be calculated as you go through the checkout process.

Individual plants will be sent.
See our Frequently Asked Questions Page for further information.

More information about Thuja plicata (Western Red Cedar)

Similar in appearance to Leylandii, Thuja plicata (Western Red Cedar) has a lush, dark green feathery foliage that has bronze tips in the winter.

Thuja has a pleasant almost fruity aroma which is most noticeable when brushed against or crushed in some way.

Unlike many conifers, Thuja will re-shoot from old wood, making it slightly more forgiving as a hedge. Thuja plicata grows almost at the same rate Leylandii making it a good choice for quick-growing hedging.

Thuja plicata has thick, dense foliage and is great as a windbreak or to provide screening and filter out air pollution from nearby roads.  It is tough and hardy  and will grow in any soil (including chalk) as long as it is not water-logged for long periods in the winter. It is also able to grow in sun or shade.

Thuja is a good choice if you want particularly large hedge as if left unpruned it can reach heights of 70ft plus but it can be kept trimmed to as small as 1.2m (4ft) tall.

The average growth rate is 2-3ft per year.
