We recommend planting most evergreen hedging plants (including Leylandii, Laurel and most other evergreen shrubs) between 50cm and 100cm apart* (approximately 2-3 feet apart). Hedges with plants 50cm apart “fill in” quicker than those planted 100cm apart but you get just as good a hedge in the long run at either distance apart. It can just take a year or two longer to form the hedge if the plants are spaced further apart.
* Please note that distances are measured from centre of one plant to the centre of the next.
Leylandii & Western Red Cedar Hedge Spacing – Plant 50 to 100cm apart (1’8″ to 3’3″ apart). For a quicker, more instant hedge, plant 50cm apart. If you want to form a very tall hedge (5m or taller), plant 1 metre (3’3″) apart.
Most Evergreen Hedging Shrubs (including Laurel, Portugal Laurel and Griselinia) – Plant 50 to 100cm apart (1’8″ to 3’3″ apart). For a quicker, more instant hedge, plant 50cm apart.
