Greenshutters Garden Centre Newsletter July 2025
With Wimbledon well underway and the UEFA Women’s Euros just started, now is great time to get your garden spruced up for visitors.
We still have a fantastic selection of colourful bedding plants perfect for brightening up your pots and hanging baskets. Plus, our summer-flowering perennials are ready to bring lasting colour to your garden borders.
For an endless display of colour, remember to deadhead your summer bedding – it’s the secret to more flowers. And with this dry spell, water wisely: give your pots and new plants a good drink, focusing on those that need it most. Every drop counts while we wait for rain!
Looking for a dose of inspiration? July is a great time to visit open gardens such as the National Garden Scheme, RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) and National Trust gardens as well as Hestercombe, where their herbaceous borders will be bursting with summer flowers. It’s the perfect way to gather fresh ideas and spark new creativity for your own patch!
Also, pop in to Greenshutters to see our new selection of stunning plants, just waiting to bring a vibrancy to your garden. We have a new range of Hydrangea paniculata varieties as well as additions to our David Austin Roses arriving soon. Our friendly staff are always on hand to help you choose the perfect plant. See you soon!
Crocosmia
Crocosmia are stars of the midsummer garden. Few other plants make you go “Wow!” when you see them. When the star-shaped flowers are held above the lance-shaped leaves and dance in the breeze they always stand out and make a bold statement.
The best known variety is Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ (above), which is intense crimson and in full flower now.
Crocosmia ‘George Davison’ has sunny golden flowers and is just starting to bloom. The flowers of ‘Emily McKenzie’ and ‘Ember Glow’ are a rich hot orange and will appear in late summer.
Crocosmia are low maintenance, happy in most soils and like a sunny position. They bring zesty colour and cheerful character to our summer gardens year after year. Just remember to water them in long dry spells and if you give them an annual mulch of compost or manure, and they will be very happy.
Both Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Emily McKenzie’ are currently available at £14.99 while ‘George Davison’ is available at £10.99.
