IMPORTANT: These plants are too tall to be shipped on single pallets. They need to be shipped in double pallet crates. Double pallet crates are 2.4m long by 1.2m wide so will not come off the back of the lorry on a tail-lift. They will need to be taken off by hand or the double pallet will need to be unloaded using a forklift or telehandler. The individual plants weigh up to 35kg so the lorry driver will not be permitted to help unload the plants. Please ensure you have two people to help unload by hand. If you need to book a delivery slot, please give us a call on 01460 281265 (option 2) to discuss this. There is an additional delivery charge for a timed delivery. Alternatively, if you are local to us or are ordering a larger quantity, it may be more economical for us to deliver in our own vehicle, please give us a call to discuss the options.
Plant height is measured from the top of the pot.
These Thuja (Western Red Cedar) Hedging Plants are supplied in 25 or 30 litre pots.
25 litre pots are approx 37cm wide by 28cm deep. 30 litre pots are approx 38cm wide by 29cm deep.
The planting hole should be 1.5-2 times the size of the pot. Loosen the base of the hole for about another 30cm/12” to improve drainage. Mix our professional 12-14 month feed with the soil and backfill with soil or a compost and soil mix. Firm well. Keep well-watered for the first growing season. Thuja plicata is an excellent alternative hedging conifer to Leylandii, forming a thick hedge, often from the start if you plant them close enough.
They have a very pleasant sweet and fruity aroma, especially when newly clipped. The foliage is dark green and soft to touch. Both these qualities make Thuja a good choice if the hedge is next to paths or seating.
They respond well to clipping and can be kept low and narrow or allowed to grow up to 15m (50ft) or taller. A Thuja hedge can be pruned twice a year to keep a neat shape. Unlike most conifers, they will regrow if pruned hard back into bare wood.
Thuja plicata (Western Red Cedar) can turn a bronze colour in cold winter periods.
Growth rate is up to 75-90cm (2’6”-3‘0”) per year and they are largely disease-resistant, tolerating most soils and aspects, including coastal areas.
Choose Thuja plicata (Western Red Cedar) for a dense, dark-green, reliable hedge which can be kept to whatever size you like.
