Big Spring Hedging Plant Sale!
Our hedging plant sale is now on from March 31st until 10th April 2023. Check out our Special Offers and Clearance pages.
Rootballed hedging
We have reduced many of our rootballed hedging plants. These are plants that are grown in the field (rather than in pots). They can be dug up and re-planted as a hedge between November and early April. Once the plants start to grow, they need their roots in the ground to take up the water and nutrients they need to grow so we have to stop digging them up. They really need to be planted by mid-April but it depends a bit on the weather.
Pot-grown hedging
Pot-grown or container-grown hedging plants, including our instant hedging troughs, can be planted at any time of year as they have an established root system in the pot. We also have many of these in our spring hedging plant sale. As with the rootballed plants, they need to be watered in the spring and summer months after planting until their roots grow into the soil and form a big enough root system that they can get their own water and nutrients. We recommend planting all hedging plants with our 12-month controlled-release feed that has all the nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and other trace elements) that plants need to grow.
Pot-grown plants such as Laurel, Leylandii, Portuguese Laurel, Thuja (Western Red Cedar) and Griselinia are included in our hedging plant sale. This is because we are trying to clear space on our two nurseries to pot up some more plants ready for the summer and autumn 2023.
Bare-root hedging
At Greenshutters Garden Centre, we also have some bare-root, native hedging plants still available. Like rootballed plants, bare-root plants are dug from the field but the soil is washed off the roots. Rootballed plants have a ball of soil around the roots when they are dug and this is wrapped in hessian sacking to keep it together. These also need to be planted in early April. We generally only sell bare-root hedging plants from our garden centre in Somerset rather than our webshop. At the time of writing, we still have hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple, dogwood, hazel, spindle, bird cherry and privet available but it is selling fast.
